Live From Borneo…

Filed under: Malaysia, Roadtrip — joannestamplis @ 1:07 am

So we arrived safely in Kota Kinabalu and got a cab to Park HQ at Mount Kinabalu. Our original plan was to spend 19 nights on the mountain, climbing as much as possible. That was about 10 days ago; of course, plans change and the weather here is crazy. We spent 8 nights high on the mountain (around 13,000 feet) in the cozy Gurkha Hut but we climbed almost nothing. Every night it rained. Every afternoon it rained. Just as the rock looked like it was getting dry enough to climb, it rained. This is supposedly the “dry season” but the locals say it’s been raining since January!

So we hauled 100+ pounds of gear and food up the mountain when all we really needed to bring was food and a camera since we hardly used the other stuff! So between the rain and the….beurocractic issues (more to come on this later!!), we finally decided to cut our losses and run down the mountain and right now we are resting our aching legs (right now we can barely walk down steps from carrying all that weight) back in Kota Kinabalu, the largest town in Sabah.

So now we’ve got 11 days to kill before our flight to KL and peninsular Malaysia. We figured we might as well make the most of our time in Borneo so we booked a flight to Mulu, site of the massive limestone caves that you always see on the Discovery Channel, with millions of bats flying out of them.

Distance-wise we’re not that far from Mulu Cave so you would think we could hop on a bus but the only land-link to Mulu is from Sabah (in Malyasia), through Brunei, and then to Sarawak (back in Malaysia). It sounds like the border crossing might be confusing so we’ve opted for the easy option (flight) though it set us back $300+. Anyway, we’ll be milling around K.K. (Kota Kinabalu) for a few days before we leave. Sorry but no pictures or juicy details (crazy beurocracy on Kinabalu) until we get back home! Right now is the Chinese Moon Festival so we’re going to go watch the festivities tonight.
